Panorama: Linking forest regeneration with community economic development

How can we protect forests while creating better economic opportunities for the people who depend on them?

‍

In Mexico’s Sierra Gorda Biosphere Reserve, Grupo Ecológico Sierra Gorda (GESG) developed Carbono Biodiverso, a local carbon protocol that connects climate finance with forest conservation, natural forest regeneration and sustainable community development.

Developed in partnership with Querétaro’s State Secretariat for Sustainable Development (SEDESU), the programme rewards landowners for protecting and regenerating their forests, while directing funding towards local livelihoods, rural communities and environmental initiatives.

By combining forest carbon measurement, transparent climate finance and direct financial benefits for landowners, Carbono Biodiverso demonstrates how locally led climate action can protect biodiversity, support forest restoration and improve rural livelihoods.
